Olvia Academy - Fishing

Introduction

Olvia Academy is a fantastic way to get into the Life Skills of Black Desert like fishing!
  • For completing each Life Skill course you'll gain some decent starting gear and 1000 Cron Stones
  • There's also an Olvia Academy Pass that gives bonus Life Skill Exp for the course you work on
  • The Fishing course is pretty simple but most importantly it gives you some really good starter gear
  • The Life Skill courses let you grab a lot of Exp and levels for the Life Skill you're interested in as well!

Starting the Fishing Course

If you haven't tried any of the Olvia Academy courses yet, it's really easy to get started. You'll need to have graduated from the Season Server and be at least Level 60 to join the academy's classes.

You'll get rewards just for signing up in the form of an Academy Outfit and some Olvia Academy coins which have some nice rewards as well, for more information on how the Olvia Academy works, you can check out our guide here:

With that out of the way, you shouldn't really need the full context of how the academy works and everything it offers to just do this one course. Everything will be covered step by step so there's nothing too complicated to worry about.

You can start the Fishing course by visiting NPC Emma Bartali at the front desk of the academy, or even easier, just click the green Olvia Academy UI in the top right of the screen, you can then auto navigate to the instructor!

Completing the Fishing Course

There's a big reason to start the fishing course and that's the introduction gear, for starting out it's really pretty good. You'll also get 1000 Cron Stones for completing the course as with the others, so that's a nice benefit too.

Once you get to the fishing instructor, NPC Kurio, you can chat with him to learn the basics of fishing. You can also accept the quest to start the beginning of the course.

The first few quests are just talking, you'll need to make sure you use the chat option to tell Kurio, "Okay I understand everything" to complete this first intro quest once you're done reading about the basics.

After this, you'll get a quest called "Tools are the Foundation." This gives you a rod, just open up the Olvia Academy UI and select the fishing rod as a reward from the "Family Rewards - Life Skill - Fishing."

You can then Auto-navigate to NPC Zaaira for your supplies which will give you some basic bait and a much worse fishing rod, you might as well use the Terrmian Fishing Rod we're given as a reward.

Another fishing rod that people really like for fishing is the Triple-Float Fishing Rod since it gives a higher chance to catch rare fish and can catch up to 3 at once, which helps with making extra money.

Head back to NPC Kurio and you'll get your first task to catch some fish, before you do that though, you might want to collect some extra EXP from the Academy Pass. You can find the Academy pass on the right of the Olvia Academy UI.

This will function similarly to the Season Pass but it gives you Life Skill Exp and a few rewards tailoured to the particular Life Skill that you're working on, they're worth remembering because they give a good chunk of Life Exp.

You'll want to head to the shop and get the Academy Pass for 100 silver which will unlock the Pass rewards, you can grab them from the silver and loyalties section! Don't miss the extra exp.

If you're not familiar with fishing and this is your first time trying it out, you'll need to head over to the water and then click your fishing icon near the top left corner. This will let you switch from combat mode to your fishing rod.

After that you can head over to the waters edge and hit Spacebar to cast your line, if you're having trouble getting a green fish with the event rod, you can try using the standard white rod they give you.

This is because the Terrmian Fishing Rod gives a better chance to catch rarer fish, which are a higher grade. When you catch a green grade fish you can Right Click to stop fishing then go back to speak to NPC Kurio again.

If you're active fishing, you can hit Spacebar to start the minigame, you'll then have to hit space in the blue zone of the bar that appears. After that, you'll need to input a series of W/A/S/D to catch the fish.

By now you'll also be able to grab the Fishing Clothes as a reward, they're already enhanced to TRI (out of a possible PEN) so they're a pretty good starting set.

Next you'll be asked to dry your fish, this can be used for cooking, it's used a lot for pet food. Just hit (L) to open the processing menu and then click the drying button.

Place your green grade fish that you caught at Olvia Academy in the processing window and start drying.

Now NPC Kurio will ask you to go fish up a blue grade fish. Open your Olvia Academy UI and go back to your Academy Pass, you can grab some Exp and an item called [Event] Wise Housekeeper which we'll talk about later.

He'll then have a new quest for you, this time it's about selling your fish to Trader NPCs, the information is pretty good in there for chatting to him but basically you get more money for selling your fish further away up to 150% bonus.

When taking your fish over to a Trade Manager you'll be able to play the bargaining game, this lets you get more value you from your fish and takes into consideration your Trading level.

Boldly will slam the scale up or down while Carefully will adjust it ever so slightly, the goal is to balance the scales. Playing the bargaining game will reduce your energy levels but the quest gives you an Energy potion if needed.

Afterwards it's time to catch a gold grade fish, basically more of the same. After you hand in a gold fish, you'll learn a little bit more about trading and be asked to try the bargaining game with NPC Bahar the trader in Velia.

You don't actually have to sell your fish here, as you can see from the screenshot above. This is good because you can basically fishing again for the next quest. Head back to Kurio then he'll tell you about Imperial Fish Trading.

You'll be told to deliver fish to NPC Karon in Velia in exchange for Golden Seals. When you get there you can speak to them and use the Imperial Fishing Trade menu then sell the fish to them. You'll need to sell 3 fish to him.

Now all that's left is to return to NPC Kurio and catch a red grade fish. This one might take some time, you might want to just do this one AFK fishing overnight.

If you do choose to do this as active fishing, you can choose to spend energy by holding Space when casting. This paired with a triple float or similar fishing rod will let you catch up to 5 fish in one cast of your rod.

Making Money With Fishing

Now that you've finished the fishing course, what do you actually do with it? Well the game has taught you pretty much everything you need to know to get started and make some money, but not really what to do with it.

There's plenty of depth to fishing but I'll just assume you're here to just set it and forget it, make AFK money by fishing overnight or while busy through the day. Most AFK fishers head to straight to Velia.

You can fish here on the coast over night, then transport your fish over to Bukpo in the Land of the Morning Light. You don't need to sail there, but you can if you'd like. Most people take the Abyssal Well to teleport over there.

Fast travelling wont effect the value of your fish. You'll need to have completed the Magnus questline up to the quest "In return for your help" which is about 25 quests in. We have a guide here:

If you've never been to the Land of the Morning Light, you can unlock the Abyssal Well for it by following this short questline as well:

These might take an hour or two to complete but you should have the Magnus done anyway as it provides universal storage and fast travelling and a PEN piece of combat defense gear, so it's good to have done.

This is the route you'll take from the Seoul Land of the Morning Light Abyssal Well all the way to Bukpo where you'll deliver fish to the Trade Manager NPC.

Make sure you've collected all of the exp in your Olvia Academy UI from the Academy Pass, these levels give you mastery which can help you choose which fish to discard, it also increases your prize catch fishing rate.

You can see more details by pressing P, going to your life skill tab then clicking [Learn More]. This is a decent start and will get you earning money over night but you might need more inventory especially as a new player.

If you're really investing into fishing, you can grab the TRI Manos Life Clothes Box which will let you get the TRI Manos fishing clothes. If you have plenty of Cron Stones spare as a veteran player or you don't do combat you can use them.

Alternatively you can make some TET Crio clothes using the TRI set you have, which only uses 210 Cron Stones per attempt. Life skill clothes have a set enhancement % so fail stacks don't change their enhance rate.

At TET, Crio clothes are the same as TRI Manos but the TRI Manos being upgraded to TET at 355 Cron Stones per attempt with a pity of 15 isn't too bad either unless you're struggling for Crons or you're interested in combat gear.

Either way, fishing can be a solid investment that nets you hundreds of millions to billions of silver per night of AFK fishing depending on what you catch, your trading level and if you're discarding everything but rare fish.

You should make your decision on whether you want to use the Manos gear when you know you're into fishing or not but this questline shown in the image above is really handy, especially if you're new with a small inventory.

Basically by completing the questline [Life] Shim Cheong's Fish Tank! Fresh from the Nethers!, you will be given a fish tank that holds 50 slots of fish for you, which obviously means more fish to sell.

There's enough on fishing to warrant a full guide on it but this should be more than enough for you to set yourself up AFK to make money without worry too much about it or still having a focus on gearing for combat.
