Olvia Academy - Hunting

Introduction

Olvia Academy is a great new player experience helping to learn the Life Skills of Black Desert!
  • For completing each Life Skill course you'll gain some decent starting gear and 1000 Cron Stones
  • There's also an Olvia Academy Pass that gives bonus Life Skill Exp for the course you work on
  • Hunting is one of the more active Life Skills, meaning it's not AFK friendly and requires attention
  • The Life Skill courses let you grab a lot of Exp and levels for the Life Skill you're interested in as well!

Starting the Hunting Course

If you haven't tried any of the Olvia Academy courses yet, it's really easy to get started. You'll need to have graduated from the Season Server and be at least Level 60 to join the academy's classes.

You'll get rewards just for signing up in the form of an Academy Outfit and some Olvia Academy coins which have some nice rewards as well, for more information on how the Olvia Academy works, you can check out our guide here:

Now on to Hunting, everything will be covered step by step so there's nothing too complicated to worry about, but if you're new to Black Desert or its Life Skill systems they might feel a little unfamiliar.

You can start the Hunting course by visiting NPC Emma Bartali at the front desk of the academy, or even easier, just click the green Olvia Academy UI in the top right of the screen, you can then auto navigate to the instructor!

Completing the Hunting Course

If you don't know, completing the Life Skill courses will give you 1000 Cron Stones, so they're already a really good idea, even if you have no interest in Life Skilling. You'll also gain some TRI Hunting based gear too!

This equipment will help you get started, though if you enjoy Hunting and want it to be something you continue, you should check out the Choose Your Adventurer's Life Starter Box in the Olvia Academy Coin Currency Exchange UI.

Make sure you access the Bonus Rewards through the Academy Pass, the Life Skill exp they usually grant a lot of exp for that Life Skill, helping you to jump up through Life Skill levels before you even do much.

If you've never tried Hunting and aren't feeling too confident, you can ask some questions to NPC Leo Laurie when starting out but the game will guide you through setting up a farm step by step.

You'll already be able to claim the TRI hunting armor from the Olvia Academy rewards so make sure to equip it, they don't give you a Matchlock though. Instead you'll have to grab one from NPC Zaaira in the building behind Leo Leurie

This is a quest reward and you don't need to rent it from her, it also comes as a +5 already. It works just fine for the Hunting course.

You can also rent one from Hessenvale. He's over in Western Guard Camp and it'll take 2 contribution points to rent a Matchlock from him. Here's his location on the map, it's close by to Velia if you've never been there before.

You can also check the Central Marketplace for a Matchlock that matches your Hunting level that you can see in Character (P) by clicking the tool icon next to the crossed swords.

For the Hunting Course it shouldn't really be necessary, but it's good to consider for the future. I'd say you might want to hold off on buying one because the course gives you a lot of levels through the Academy Pass.

Leo Laurie will explain some different parts of Hunting like Taxidermy and Butchering, then he'll task you with hunting your first set of targets, 5 Giant Elk. You'll also need to gather 10 Deer meat from them as well.

You'll have your auto-navigation set by the quest, so you can auto-path over to where the Giant Elks are. You'll need to Right Click to load / reload your gun, then use Left click to fire. You can crouch with Q and roll with shift+direction.

When you've killed one of the Giant Elk, you can approach them and use Butchering with the R key, this can take a few seconds but when you're done you'll be given Deer Meat and Hunting Exp along with some other drops.

It shouldn't take long at all to get 10 Deer Meat, you'll probably be done in 2 or 3 kills, once you've killed all 5 Giant Elk, then you can move on to the next quest in the course back at Leo Laurie.

While you're riding back to the NPC location you might struggle to drift / sprint with your horse. This is because you can use your matchlock from horse back while riding. Unequip it if you want to be able to drift again.

When you get back, you'll be made to go through a small movement / shooting tutorial. It's super quick and just goes over rolling and crouching. Crouching also increases your fire range and reload speed.

Now that you're done the short tutorial, you'll be asked to go do the same thing as the last hunt, except this time its Boars. They're a little sparce so you might need to move a little out of the quest area to find them.

Unlike the Giant Elk, these will charge at you. Just make sure you reload before shooting them and you'll kill them quickly. They're pretty easy to avoid. Once done, return to the instructor.

After speaking to Leo Laurie again, he'll task you with hunting a Giant Brown Bear. You'll be able to take the TRI hunting bag reward now from the bottom left corner of the Olvia Academy UI under Family Rewards.

The Giant Black Bear will actually attack you but the attacks are really delayed, you have plenty of time to dodge with a roll. It will telegraph its attacks pretty obviously and you'll have time to dodge and reload while crouching.

Kill the Giant Black Bear, butcher it and return to your instructor. After this, you'll be sent on a small hunting tour in different regions. You'll visit Kamasylvia, The Mountain of Eternal Winter and O'dylitta with various kill quests.

It's more of the same, just make sure you're equipping the latest matchlock you have and accepting your Academy Pass Exp rewards. You'll then need to hand in the 100 Wildspark as mentioned earlier!

You'll get Wildspark from Butchering, so make sure you're Butchering your kills during these lessons. After that, you'll just need to head back to Leo Laurie and then type "Olvium Frontia!" in the general chat.

What did you think of Hunting? Is it something you'll continue or did you just want the rewards for the course? Let us know!
